Looking after your septic system

1 min readUpdated Sep 26, 2026

A septic system that is looked after lasts for many years. A few habits make most of the difference.

Good habits

  • Have the tank pumped regularly. Most homes need it every three to five years, depending on the size of the tank and the household.

  • Flush only toilet paper. Wipes, even ones labeled flushable, grease, paint and chemicals do not belong in the system.

  • Spread laundry and other heavy water use over the week.

  • Fix leaking taps and running toilets.

  • Keep cars, heavy equipment, pools and sheds off the tank and the bed, and plant only grass over them.

  • Point downspouts and other surface water away from the bed.

Signs it needs a look

  • Slow drains, or gurgling sounds.

  • Sewage odors near the tank or the bed.

  • Soggy ground, or unusually green grass over the bed.

  • Water backing up into the house.
